Los tweets se multiplicaron con rapidez: le desearon enfermedades y la muerte. Pero también muchas personas, entre ellas varias actrices, se solidarizaron desde las redes sociales, apoyando su decisión y el hecho de poner en el centro de escena un debate que es silenciado desde las raíces machistas de la cultura y que esconde una realidad que afecta los derechos de miles de mujeres en el país.

A diferencia de lo afirmado por las voces que, desde posiciones morales y religiosas, continúan pesando sobre el Estado, el aborto no es un asesinato. El Código Penal no lo iguala con un homicidio, e incluso contempla su legalidad desde 1921. El artículo 86 establece excepciones a la punibilidad en caso de que el embarazo implique peligro para la vida y/o salud de la mujer, o sea producto de una violación. Esto fue ratificado por la Corte Suprema de Justicia el 13 de marzo de 2012, al confirmar la sentencia del Tribunal Superior de Chubut que, en el año 2010, había autorizado un aborto a una joven de 15 años violada por su padrastro. A diferencia de lo afirmado por las voces que, desde posiciones morales y religiosas, continúan pesando sobre el Estado, el aborto no es un asesinato. A pesar de que la Corte exhortó a las autoridades de todos los niveles de gobierno a garantizar el acceso al aborto legal e instó al sistema de salud y a los poderes judiciales de todas las jurisdicciones a que no obstruyan la práctica, la interrupción voluntaria del embarazo continúa siendo obstaculizada. La desinformación de alimentada por la inacción estatal viene así de la mano de dos factores: la negación del aborto como derecho y la criminalización que rodea a todo lo relacionado con el procedimiento.

Según estadísticas del Ministerio de Salud, se estima que, en Argentina, alrededor 500 mil mujeres abortan cada año, de las cuales más de 70 mil ingresan a hospitales públicos por complicaciones. Es una práctica que atraviesa todas las clases sociales, pero son las de mayor poder adquisitivo las que pueden pagar las condiciones sanitarias mínimos para no exponerse a procedimientos riesgosos. La clandestinidad del aborto es la principal causa de mortalidad materna en el país: anualmente mueren entre 150 y 300 mujeres que no tienen las posibilidades de acceder a los requisitos básicos de higiene. Esto viene unido a un mercado que amasa una fortuna gracias a la posibilidad de lucrar a partir de la falta de políticas públicas que contemplen el aborto como parte de los derechos reproductivos de las mujeres.

Esos son los datos que el Estado ignora al negar un debate urgente y necesario para la legalización del aborto y para la implementación efectiva de la Educación Sexual Integral (ESI), actualmente desfinanciada. Lo cierto es que, mientras pasan los meses y la militancia feminista continúa luchando  – como lo viene haciendo hace décadas – por el derecho a decidir sobre el propio cuerpo, el silencio se va resquebrajando. El problema, como suele suceder cada vez que el feminismo se instala en el centro del escenario a partir de declaraciones de personajes de la farándula, es la banalización del debate por parte del periodismo. Salvo contadas excepciones, el caso de Muriel Santa Ana fue reducido a una mera “polémica”, que no profundizó de forma crítica sobre un tema que es origen de múltiples violencias y desigualdades de género. La interrupción voluntaria del embarazo queda reducida así a un dilema moral, cuando en realidad se trata de una realidad mucho más compleja. Nadie habla de los datos duros, de la situación en la que se encuentran las clases desfavorecidas, ni de la necesidad de una política estatal que satisfaga una demanda integral:educación sexual para decidir, anticonceptivos para no abortar y aborto legal para no morir.

En este sentido, los medios de comunicación tienen la responsabilidad de evitar el exitismo del escándalo para poder dar una discusión seria en clave de género, con información concreta, tomando estos hechos como una oportunidad, un llamado a la reflexión y al diálogo. Así, un tema tan urgente y necesario como los derechos sexuales y reproductivos de las mujeres no deben quedar reducidos al sensacionalismo, sino ser parte de un debate que permite desterrar los sentidos comunes que versan sobre una idea de maternidad concebida como una exigencia, arraigada en la cultura machista y en la religión.
