El Ministerio de Espacio Público e Higiene Urbana de la Ciudad conmemora, como cada 23 de mayo, un nuevo aniversario del icónico monumento porteño.
“El Obelisco es uno de los monumentos más representativos de la Ciudad, parada obligada y punto de encuentro de vecinos y turistas. Junto al BA Verde conforman una de las postales porteñas más lindas y buscadas”, expresó Clara Muzzio, ministra de la cartera.
Construido en un tiempo récord de 31 días, se encuentra ubicado en la intersección de las avenidas 9 de julio y Corrientes, sobre la Plaza de la República; donde antes se encontraba la iglesia San Nicolás de Bari. En ese histórico lugar se izó por primera vez en Buenos Aires, en 1812, la bandera argentina.
Tiene una altura de 67,5 metros y para ingresar cuenta con una única puerta ubicada en su costado oeste.
En su cúspide hay cuatro ventanas con persianas metálicas a las que se llega por una escalera marinera de 206 escalones, con 7 descansos cada 8 metros y el último a 6 metros.
Su punta en “roma” mide 40 centímetros y tiene una caja de hierro empotrada; que guardaría una foto del jefe de máquinas y un documento con detalles e indicaciones sobre el monumento.
La construcción del Obelisco estuvo a cargo del arquitecto argentino Alberto Prebisch y se realizó con motivo del cuarto centenario de la llamada “primera fundación de Buenos Aires”, por Pedro de Mendoza. La obra comenzó el 20 de marzo de 1936 y fue inaugurada el 23 de mayo de ese mismo año.
Iluminación de Monumentos por la Semana de Mayo
Del 22 al 28 de mayo el Ministerio de Espacio Público e Higiene Urbana iluminará -entre las 18 y las 7 horas- algunos de los monumentos más emblemáticos de la Ciudad; con los colores de la bandera argentina: Obelisco, Floralis, Planetario, Palacio Lezama, Torre Monumental, Puente de la mujer, Monumento de Plaza Congreso, Usina del Arte, Monumento de los Españoles, Monumento de Plaza Congreso y Pirámide de Mayo.
