La escultura sobre la cúpula es de bronce macizo, de 5 m de alto y fue traída desde Francia en 1898, siendo su montaje un gran espectáculo. La imágen simboliza a la diosa Palas Ateneas (griega), o Minerva (romana), representando la sabiduría, la inteligencia, las artes, la literatura y la filosofía. Su antorcha eléctrica se iluminaba para difundir las noticias más importantes.
